Description

So here's something that always bothered me about the episode "Extreme Pokemon": Arcanine. This is Arcanine's Pokedex entry from Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire: "Arcanine is known for its high speed. It is said to be capable of running over 6,200 miles in a single day and night. The fire that blazes wildly within this Pokémon's body is its source of power." Here's another fun fact: Arcanine's base speed is 95, whilst Bayleaf's is only 60. See the problem yet? Shortcut or not, there is no way that Ash should have been able to beat Gary in the race.

Aaaaaanyway, turning a skateboard race into extreme gear was a pretty obvious choice - it's all there in the title, after all! Thanks to Dark Burraki for the Jet sprites web.archive.org/web/2010010220…, and Werekitty for his redesigned "Riders Werekitty" sprites and this week's special effects.

It's theorised that Arcanine's somewhat paltry speed outside of priority moves, in relation to the Pokedex entries, is that Arcanine has great raw speed like a cheetah, but trades the ability to make sharp turns and quick stops for sheer endurance. Thus, no matter the stat-based speed of the other Pokemon involved, if there were enough sharp turns and/or dead end paths on Gary's route, and few enough straight stretches, anything with enough agility around corners would be able to 'outspeed' it in a race.
